About PerchShelf

PerchShelf is a drag-and-drop shelf for Windows 10 and 11, made by Hayasaka Apps, a small independent developer. It gives Windows what Yoink and Dropover give the Mac: a place to park files in the middle of a drag.

Why it exists

On Windows, a drag only works while the mouse button is held down. When the destination is a window that is hidden, on another monitor or not open yet, you end up juggling windows with the button pressed, or opening two Explorer windows side by side. PerchShelf splits the drag into two steps: park the file on a shelf next to the cursor, then drag it out when the destination is ready.

Release history

How it is built

PerchShelf is a .NET desktop app. It notices a drag through a low-level mouse hook and recognises a shake by counting quick direction changes of the cursor; the write-up is in Detecting a mouse shake during drag and drop on Windows. Files on the shelf are kept as references, so even very large files land instantly and nothing is copied until you decide.
